Offshore wave energy test proofs Slow Mill technology

    Press release
    March 5, 2025

We are thrilled to announce that we reached a significant milestone. We managed to generate electricity at sea with our at scale wave energy device. For the first time a Dutch company has achieved that in the North Sea. This result signals that with wave energy, the North Sea is the powerhouse for the energy transition, together with offshore wind.

Slow Mill was founded in 2012 to develop the Slow Mill wave energy technology, based on a unique blade construction that greatly resists open flow. In the following years, the technology was developed by testing increasingly larger scale models in the lab, on open water and in the North Sea to the point where a wave array of several well performing autonomic plug and play models can be demonstrated. Members of the management team own the technology and are highly motivated to bring a successful commercial product onto the market to accelerate the energy transition, support ocean life, lessen fossil fuel dependence and boost the circular economy.

Awards

The Slow Mill has been under active development since 2012. At that time it already was a promising technology but lots of research has been done since. Throughout the years the promising aspects of a modern-day wave energy technology capable of harnessing not only the energy rich waves of the oceans but also the relative short and irregular choppy waves of the North Sea, has generated quite some attention in the sustainable energy field.

Multiple competitions the Slow Mill has entered have resulted in being showcased, nominated or awarded a prize. Most remarkable being the iSea Clash of Concepts, All Energy Day - Aim For The Moon, Making Waves - Ideas from Europe, the Do Challenge Sint Maarten and the Global Entrepreneurship Summit organized by the United States and the Netherlands.

Our advanced technologies are shaping the future of sustainable power both in the Netherlands and around the world.
